Oscars Ooh's and Boo's

The 82nd Annual Academy Awards red carpet had a few stand out trends this year, metallics and blush colored dresses seem to be the top shades of choice. Along with strap less, one shoulder and front slits showing a little leg making strong appearances. With all those bare necklines I thought I would have seen a lot more statement necklaces, it was anything but last night. I'm thinking either the recession has hit Hollywood or stylists opted their clients out of heavy makeup and jewelry. A less is more approach since many of the dresses had a lot of ornamental detail going on.

My big complaint of the night was the hair, was there a memo sent out that I didn't get that sloppy fly away hair is in? (Sarah Jessica Parker & Penelope Cruz) Also one person went a litttle heavy on the self tanner and blended in with her strapless ruffled Versace Atlier gown, yes Demi Moore. Less is "Moore", Mrs. Kutcher.

The best dressed men of the evening all wore Tom Ford tuxedos. Steve Martin, Alec Baldwin, Tom Ford and Colin Forth being my favorite. I also liked Robert Downey Jr.'s Lanvin tuxedo and teal blue bow tie, he always makes it fun.

Overall it was good, safe red carpet showing, with some mistakes that made people just miss the mark. Carey Mulligan and Anna Kendricks were a little disappointing as they were the two youngest screen sirens there and were both lack luster.

Armani Prive and Marchessa seemed to be the designers of choice, Armani having in my opinion the two best dressed of the top three dressed ladies of the evening.

Top Ooh's

Amanda Seyfried in a Armani Prive silvery white strapless dress with side gathering detail. Loved that she pulled back her hair, highlighting her gorgeous face. The jewlery was Lorraine Schwartz, I loved that the bracelts were not perfectly matchy match, keeping her feeling young.

Best Actress Winner Sandra Bullock, Blind Sides us in a Marchesa champagne color, form fitting dress with lace bodice. The retro hair and lips complete the look. Perfection head to toe!J.Lo in a Armani Prive Irridescent Pink stunner, with Cartier jewlery. Hair and makeup flawless. One of the best of the carpet.

 More Ooh's

Meryl Streep in Chris March (former Project Runway Contestant) white, draped, long sleeve gown with a flattering neckline. She completed this classic look with a Jimmy Choo platform and Swarvorski clutch.Queen Latifah in a beutiful baby pink Badgley Mischka rhinestone, studded one shoulder dress, with a mermaid finish. Her hair and makeup just right, I wish more people had her finess.Diane Krueger Chanel Haute Couture halter style dress with rosette detail at neck, waist and leg stunning. A dress like this would wear most people, she just happens to be lucky enough to wear the dress. She hit's the mark again!

Top Boo's

Zoe Saldana in Givenchy. What a beauty this woman is. Unfortunately her gown, not so much. It was ok from the chest up. Her hair and makeup perfect, The waist down, just awful. it looks like an easter theme pinata exploded all over her. She loses just like Avatar.Charlize Theron in Dior Haute Couture two tone lavendar dress with a train. This dress would have been a hit, if she didn't look like she was wearing two Sprinkle cupcakes on her boobs. The whole thing was distracting, huge FAIL!Vera Farmiga in Marchesa fushia ruffled gown. I know ruffles are in but this dress wore her.

More Boo's

Cameron Diaz in Oscar De La Renta gown with gold embellishments. I didn't have a problem with the dress, it was actually quite lovely. It was conservative and boring compared to Cam's usual style choice. What really ruined it was the big hair, looked very dated.Penelop Cruz in Donna Karan Couture strapless wine color gown that I know most people liked but I'm very disappointed with. Hair was sloppy and I thought there was too much gathering on the top half of the dress. I guess when you know you are going to lose you don't have to try so hard.Tina Fey in Michael Kors. Oh Liz Lemon less is more for you. That terrible poofy hair, please leave the bumpits back east for the Snookie's of the world. If this is Vogue's styling charity to you, I would be pissed!

Agree with everything! I also thought Kate Winslet was stunning as usual. I always love her style. Hey, whatever happened to Calvin Klein on the red carpet? Helen Hunt used to wear his styles all the time and she rocked them.

The great thing about fashion is that one person's treasure is another person's trash. It's all personal taste, I just think it's fun to hear everyone's input. Happy you all liked the post today!

No comments on Zoe Saldana?

I absolutely agree on your top three oohs. The Armani Prive gowns were sculptural, elegant and modern. Amanda Seyfried and JLo both had the confidence to pull off the look. What can I say about Sandra Bullock? She was pure polished radiance and made the dress look beautiful. It was her night in every sense of the word. I also agree with your top three boos. I love Charlize Theron, but those fabric adornments! The gown didn't wear her, those oversized lilac pasties did! Zoe Saldana and Vera Farmiga, I am reminded of the old adage "less is more". I did, however, like Cameron Diaz's gown. Osca De La Renta knows how to flatter a woman's body and the dress is old hollywood glam. I agree, a smoother (ala Sandra Bullock) hairstyle would have been more flattering. You've got to let the eye rest somewhere! And lastly, Penelope Cruz. I loved the color, but something bothered me about the dress. You were spot on! The shirring in the bodice was way too much, but the fabric in the skirt cascaded beautifully.

Enjoyed this read Johanna!!
Well, i really liked Cameron Diaz in Oscar De La Renta , loved her hair for once too :-) As for Zoe Saldana , i personally thought she looked like a purple ostrich! with great makeup.
I really havent a clue about fashion or trends, but i think i missed that memo re: messy hair. Didn't know TORNADOOS' were in!! lol

ohhhhhhhh i just get so excited when my oohs and boos match yours...i feel so hip, so trendy...so withit!! i couldnt agree more about zoe too...man, if i never saw the second half of her, the bottom, i wouldve called her to be one of the top best but the min i got the wide shot...OUCH! and speaking of a half good half bad look...if i saw only cameron's top, i wouldve thought it was a head shot for her cougar talk show in snl...those gold hoops, the laughable dork-do..wtf?! anyway, sooooooooooo much fun to watch...clearly a superbowl night for us gals! xo

All the flesh (natural or spray-on) toned dresses put me to sleep. Were they purposely TRYING to fade into their dresses? I mean on one extreme you have Demi with what looks like a dress dyed to match her skin, and on the other extreme, Amanda Seyfried in well, pretty much the same. White dress and could she be any paler? Both gorgeous dresses even though Demi's Versace was too reminicent of the criss cross ribbon bodice dress of what? 5? 8? years ago. If they had switched dresses, or at least the color of their dress, they both might have been stunning.

The more I see Queen Latifah at these award shows, the more impressed I am. Great dress and looked great on her. I have to disagree with you on Meryl Streep though. She carried it off but I think she could carry anything off because the woman carries herself like nobody, but that dress was dowdy old lady and dowdy old lady she is not!

Weird about the jewelry. Not even any low-key necklaces were there?

Great blog as always Jargan! This is my post-award-ceremony destination.

I love your dress choices! However, I totally disagree about your boos for hairstyles. When I first saw Cameron Diaz I was shocked. I thought she was a WOW with her big hair. Loved, loved, loved it. She went from girl next door to drop dead gorgeous and it didn't look dated at all. Also loved the Tina Fey do! Big hair is always in vogue - no not Snooki bumpits hair but Brigitte Bardot hair!

Please don't ever say anything bad about Penelope Cruz...she would look great in a potato sack! :-)

March 17, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterRay

Oh Ray,
I just didn't like this dress for her. It was ok, and that's just not good enough for Penelope since she is always a red carpet star. She was the only one I truly looked forward too, and then was let down. I still think she is one of the most stunning women out there, just not the dress. :)
